Five HISD Schools selected for the U.S. News and World Report “Best High Schools List”

December 11, 2009 - Five HISD schools are on the 2010 Best High Schools list in the latest issue of U.S. News and World Report.
The 100 schools that did the best in this analysis earned gold medals. The next 461 schools were awarded silver medals and 1189 schools earned bronze medals. Challenge Early College High School, The High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice and the High School for Performing and Visual Arts received Silver Medals and Eastwood Academy received a Bronze Medal. U.S. News and World Report uses a formula produced in collaboration with School Evaluation Services, a K–12 data research and analysis businesses run by Standard & Poor’s. The magazine put 18,743 high schools in 49 states through a three-step analysis. First, they measure how each school’s students performed on state tests, adjusting for student circumstances. They next evaluate how well each school’s disadvantaged students did. Finally, they look at whether the school was successful in providing college-level coursework.
Students at Eastwood Academy High School follow a four-year plan of Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement core courses with a wide variety of Pre-AP, AP, Dual Credit HCC, Career and Technology as well as regular electives. Eastwood Academy High School is embarking on a new challenge by fulfilling the IB application requirements in an effort to provide Houston East End students the best opportunities to help them succeed in college. “We don’t focus on the basics, we begin with the end in mind and we go after our goals. We have one mission, one vision and one purpose in mind; to make all of our students COLLEGE-BOUND!”
