Alphonso Lloyd - A true student-athlete!

One of the many benefits of attending Eastwood Academy High School - A College Prep. School - is that thanks to the collaboration of HISD and Austin High School, our students are able to participate in UIL competitions with our sister schools. Alphonso LLoyd has developed into a great student-athlete by participating in multiple UIL sports and preparing himself to be in route to an ALL ACADEMIC/ALL AMERICAN well rounded student. After participating in Football, Alphonso has now “hit the ground running” and he has joined the track team. During the last track meet, Alphonso placed 4th in the 2 mile run with a time of 10:59, 5th in the 400m relay, and he had some adversity that held him from finishing 1st in the hurtles.

We have many other students participating in UIL competitions in Band, Soccer, Baseball and Volleball. The students take a short walk to Ausin H.S. (or they drive to their zoned school) to participate and represent both the Academic Preparation that Eastwood has to offer as well as the athletic preparation that our comprehensive high schools and our district provides for UIL competitions.

We are a FAMILY-ORIENTED SCHOOL! Parent meeting a HUGE SUCCESS!

We want to thank all of our parents that participated in our meeting this week. Our agenda was filled with items such as FAFSA- Financial Aid, AP Testing, Planners, Community Service Hours, U.S. Census, our core values and our P.T.O. fund raisers. As we continue to grow our family-oriented school, we want to acknowledge all of the parents in attendance. We look forward to having your support during our P.T.O. BBQ and our Gardening Project. WE LOVE OUR PARENTS!

Globalization = Eastwood Students Traveling to Europe!

We are proud to announce that our Eastwood Students will be traveling to Europe from March 11th - March 21st. The Eastwood Students have been working to raise funds and find corporate sponsors to support them with their trip to Spain and France. Well-rounded student should have a concept of a globalized culture and the understanding of diversity, therefore, Eastwood staff members have collaborated for months to ensure that a trip to Europe is something our students can enjoy. We would like to thank all of our sponsors, business partmers and Ms. Trejo for making this opportunity possible for our students.

All Star Roofing partners with Eastwood Runners to raise awareness on teen dating abuse & violence

Eastwood Students join the Royalty Organization to bring awareness to teen dating abuse and violence in the Houston Area. The Eastwood Runners will participate in this weekend’s 5K run to address issues of violence and to encourage young people who experience or witness abuse, to excel in school. Eastwood students continue their drive to do what’s right by raising awareness for teen dating violence and improve school safety in our neighborhood schools. Eastwood students also lead by example by encouraging others to be involved and to serve their communities while improving student academic achievement. The Eastwood Runners, who’se theme is RUN - LEARN - SERVE - LEAD received the distinct honor of having ALL STAR ROOFING sponsor them as leaders at this weekend’s run.

Project GRAD Houston’s 6th Annual Parent Convention - Passport to College!

On March 5, 2010 Project GRAD Houston will host its 6th Annual Parent Convention at Houston Community College – Northeast. This year’s theme “Passport to College” reminds us that access to higher education is much like traveling; it requires planning and preparation so that nothing keeps us from our individual destinations. Admission, lunch, and transportation to the Convention are all FREE for our College-Bound Eastwood Parents!

Sessions in English and Spanish will be offered. In addition, community and college/university partners will also be on-hand to share information on saving and planning for college. Project GRAD Houston serves HISD high schools through a non-profit education reform model serving 132,000 economically disadvantaged youth in 211 schools across the nation. Since its inception in 1994, GRAD has awarded over $16 million in college scholarships to more than 4,000 HISD students. Melvin Fields Scholarship Fund!

Mr. Fields, our Science Teacher that recently passed away, will be remembered through a $1,000.00 scholarship given to an Eastwood student interested in the field of Education. We are in the process of supporting Ms. Fields, Melvin Field’s wife, in creating the scholarship application and having the students apply for the scholarship with a deadline set for April 15th. Soon after, we will assist Ms. Fields in the interview process. Candidates will be selected and we will provide her the opportunity to select the top candidate for the scholarship through an interview process. The scholarship committee (composed of Eastwood Staff and the Fields Family) will conduct the interviews on-site and award the scholarship to the awarded student at commencement. Additional application information is forthcoming.

Ivy League Focus Study Group

The Ivy League Focus Study Group has grown to the second wave of Saturday and Sunday S.A.T. Preparatory Course. Eastwood Academy High School remains tenacious on a College Preparatory focus, therefore, our second group of in-depth studying for the S.A.T. is being challenged to DREAM BIG DREAMS. The first group managed to get some truly remarkable S.A.T. scores and they have set themselves apart from the norm. The Ivy League Focus Study Group members have put themselves in a situation to score well over the average scores and begin their journey to some of the top ranked universities.
