Due to the program’s cost to the school of $475 per student, a new contract that will resemble a college-tuition and fees lesson, will be required in order to earn entrance into our 5th Period classes and our Saturday and Sunday course offerings. We all know that S.A.T. preparation is an essential tool to earn entrance into prestigious 4 year universities, therefore, we will be offering courses on M/W and T/Th rotations as well as on Saturdays and Sundays. Eastwood Academy exists in the East End neighborhood to support inner-city students on their journey to college, therefore, we value S.A.T. preparation classes and we offer them to the students at no cost, however, the attendance responsibility is to be carried by the student.

Our students will be required to attend all of the sessions offered including the mock exams and the benchmark exams. Failure to attend 2 or more classes will result in removal from the program and an S.A.T. service charge of $25 per day missed. Penalizing payment fees are not to exceed $50.00. It is imperative that all EASTWOOD College Preparatory students be reminded of our Mission, our Vision and our Purpose, therefore, EVERYONE is REQUIRED to take the S.A.T. and the A.C.T. at least 2 times prior to the December month of their senior year. Cost and preparation for the exam will be the students’ responsibility if they fail to attend our free services provided!

“The greatest fear for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it!” - Michelangelo

We are proud to announce that we will be having a new member of the EASTWOOD FAMILY. Our new Dean of Students (Instruction) position is going to Ms. Ivonne Rodriguez. She will be joining our Eastwood Family Monday, August 27th.

Ms. Ivonne Rodriguez is a former Bilingual Elementary Teacher and she joins the Eastwood Family after working at the High School level as a College Access Coordinator and a High School Community Affairs Coordinator. Among many of her skills and talents, Ms. Rodriguez helped to maintain the College Preparatory mentality in a large 4A/5A Comprehensive High School setting. While building relationships with parents, community members, and teachers, Ms. Rodriguez managed to support some of the most at-risk students on their journey to college. Ms. Rodriguez is an Austin High School graduate and she knows the East End community really well. She holds a Masters in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor of Science. Aside from being one of our top Haberman Educational Leader Candidates in HISD, she recently completed her Principal Certification. Her bilingual education background will be a perfect match for our Eastwood Family.

Ms. Rodriguez has had multiple leadership roles in education ranging from Instructional Specialist, Community Affairs Coordinator, Lead Teacher, Science Department Chair, and most importantly, Science Teacher. She has been a loyal part of HISD for well over 12 years and she will now be assuming many of the counselor and some new administrative responsibilities.

Ms. Ivonne Rodriguez builds strong relationships with College Recruiters, and she currently has a phenomenal working relationship with HCC. Her forte is to assist students in comprehensive high schools on their financial journey to college. Ms. Rodriguez was the leader of many of Project GRAD’s scholarship initiatives and she supported parents and students from inner-city, at-risk neighborhoods, on their understanding of the nuances in college entrance requirements, FAFSA, Scholarship Opportunities, etc…

Please join us in welcoming our new member of the EASTWOOD FAMILY, Ms. Ivonne Rodriguez.

ONE MISSION…

As we welcome our new Ninth Grade students we wanted to dedicate a brief description of our school to them.

At Eastwood Academy College Preparatory High School we have “One Mission, One Vision, One Purpose: College-Bound!” and we focus on the vision that we will all graduate from college. The teachers staff and students will NURTURE, EDUCATE and CHALLENGE each other to maximize our collective academic achievement. Individually we strive for personal responsibility, building on our individual strengths and background.

Every student actively participates in their own success and they all act like a proud member of Eastwood Academy College Preparatory High School. We carry out our daily work, our effort and our courage to learn with one purpose in mind: To give our best, for each day passed will not come again. We seize the day (Carpe Diem) and we get things done! We understand that there are “No shortcuts to college…We Work Hard! We Get THINGS DONE!” We keep our focus on our investments: “We keep your eye on the prize…college-bound!” In short, “We make each day our masterpiece!”

Everyone at Eastwood strives to make a difference in our famlilies, our community, and our school. We understand that the brighter we are, the more we begin to understand that we have much more to learn!

The Eastwood Academy Code of Honor is central to our mission as a college preparatory high school. Honor is the foundation of teaching, learning, and community spirit at Eastwood Academy and all students share the responsibility for maintaining and strengthening this foundation. The Honor Code fosters a spirit of mutual trust, respect, and honesty at Eastwood Academy among all community members.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community service is a requirement for all students.

All students are required to earn 20 hours per year in community service as outlined in the Student Contract. No more than 10 hours can be earned on campus.
It is recommended that students do additional hours of community service to be competitive during the college application period.
Community service forms are available in the office. The forms must be completed and signed by the person supervising the student. The forms must be turned in at the end of the month in which the service is performed. For example, hours for service performed in February will not be credited in May
Juniors and seniors will be allowed off campus lunch privileges once they have met their required service hours.
Parents must complete a minimum of 10 service hours per year as outlined in the student contract. Please call the office if you have any questions regarding service hours.

“Education is the FIRST priority in our neighborhood!” “Once we get into higher education, the rest are soon to join!”

Please read the information below as taken from the Community Family Centers E-mail:

We will be hosting a mock-SAT at our center for any student needing practice. Each student will receive their score, along with a listing of each type of question asked, please see attachment, within a week.

This is a great way for students to know what type of problem is giving them the most trouble.

The test will be held at our center, 7524 Avenue E Houston, TX 77012 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The exam wont actually begin until 10:30am.

This is a great opportunity for seniors who haven’t taken an SAT. It will give them a few weeks to better their problem areas by October 9th and November 6th.

And as always, this is 100% free to the students. All pencils and erasers will be giving to the students. The only thing we ask is for them to bring their own calculator.

Please pass this information along to any senior, or junior, who wants to take the SAT. I will be visiting your school to pass out flyers the first week of school.

If you see any problem, or have a question, please feel free to email me back , or call me at 713-923-2316 ext 253.

Thank you for your time,

We urge all of our Ninth Grade Students to check their mailboxes at home. You should have received a detailed set of flyers, a letter, and a welcome packet; however, if you did not receive it, the following information is crucial for all of our new Eastwood Family members:

Course Selection
If you have NOT completed a course selection form with our counselor, Ms. Rachel Flores, you need to visit the school and fill out this course selection form immediately. This will allow you to have a schedule on the first day of school.

Final Report Cards from 2010
If you have not yet submitted your final report card from your last academic year, please request this from your “former” school and bring it to Eastwood. This report card must show that you have been promoted.

First Day of School
Mark your calendar for the first day of school – Monday, August 23. All students are expected to arrive on time by 8 a.m. Breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30 in the cafeteria. Lunch will be served beginning the first day of school. Students are NOT allowed to leave campus for lunch.

Eastwood Webpage
Ninth Grade students should visit the Eastwood Academy webpage on a regular basis for updated information about Eastwood. The URL for our webpage is: www.eastwoodacademy.org

Volunteer Opportunities
As you know, students are required to complete at least 20 hours of community service each year and many students earn some of these hours by working at school. If you are available to work as a volunteer during August, please call the school and put your name on a volunteer list. If your services are needed, you will be called to volunteer. Please DO NOT show up unless you receive a telephone call asking you to come to work as a volunteer at a specific time and date.

ONE MISSION ONE VISION ONE PURPOSE — COLLEGE-BOUND!

For the first time in Eastwood Academy’s history, we are welcoming three Teach for America corp members. Two of our new hires are part of the national Teach for America organization and our Dean of Instruction, Ms. Mandy Gutierrez, is an experienced teacher, an Alumn of the corp, and an active Teach for America member.

As retreived from the TFA website, http://www.teachforamerica.org:

“Educational inequity starts early and gets worse over time. By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers. Just half of students in low-income communities will graduate high school by age 18. Those who do graduate will perform on average at an eighth-grade level. Overall, only 1 in 10 students growing up in poverty will graduate from college. Educational inequity prevents children from fulfilling their potential. It limits life choices, professional options, and incomes, and weakens families and communities. Because children in low-income communities are predominantly children of color, they also face the added burden of societal low expectations and discrimination. Educational inequity undermines our nation’s economic strength. A McKinsey & Company study indicates that educational inequity costs the country $500 billion each year, which is the equivalent of a permanent national recession. Teach For America provides a critical source of well-trained teachers who are helping break the cycle of educational inequity. These teachers, called corps members, commit to teach for two years in one of 39 urban and rural regions across the country, going above and beyond traditional expectations to help their students to achieve at high levels. Teach For America’s 20,000 alumni are playing critical leadership roles in the effort to improve the quality of public education in low-income communities. Armed with the experience, conviction, and insight that come from leading children to fulfill their potential, our alumni are working from all sectors to shape our schools, policies, and investments in low-income communities. Student achievement is rising. Corps members are having a positive impact on student achievement across subject areas and grade levels, from pre-kindergarten to high school.”
